On Display: Invitations for Learning

Following a 19th month old's natural curiosity within our carefully design classroom environment

Jennifer Sit with her precious
daughter Isabelle Sit

I invited one of my closest friends (Jennifer Sit, formerly known as Jennifer Park) to bring her daughter Isabelle into our classroom.  I was interested to find out what invitations for learning would entice her.

Isabelle is 19 months old, and the following photographs prove that she is already capable and ready to play, explore, inquire, and learn.

Her aunt, Sara Park (Jen's sister) also joined us that afternoon.  Sara is a Kindergarten teacher who teaches the alternate day program.

As Isabelle toured the room with her mom or I in hand, I couldn't help but wonder what our new Kindergarten students would be intrigued by on Tuesday...

  1. My goodness, those lucky students will be by it all! What a beautiful way to capture your delightful classroom environment: through the lens of a parent and teacher, watching a toddler do what they do best - play in the moment.
Thank you, as always, for your inspiration.

  2. Hello Joanne,

I was so happy to stumble upon your blog!! I just found out on Thursday that I will be teaching FDK this year and am wondering how you begin the first few weeks in your classroom? What activities do you plan and how would you introduce all the materials to your students?
I am excited to learn about the new FDK program but am also feeling overwhelmed given the short notice and all the info out there, any advice you could give would be greatly appreciated :)

  3. You and your classroom both motivate me to change my classroom environment and my teaching practices! My plan is to make few changes at a time:)
    Keep up the good work!
    Thanks Asma
