Inquiry Documentation Sample used for Student Portfolios

Each of our students has a Documentation Portfolio.  I thought that I would upload a sample of how we document inquiries within our classroom and add them to their portfolios.  This sample is from our Curious about Colours Inquiry. Enjoy!

Please note that the circles have been used to cover our students' faces.

  1. This is so wonderful. However, now I am feeling overwhelmed! You do this for each child?! How long does this take you? I am sure the parents love it. I just don't know how to make something that looks this nice and captures the project. Any suggestions?

    1. Hi,

At first glance, this might seem overwhelming indeed!

What we do in our classroom, is we keep daily documentation notes within our inquiry binders. At the end of each term, we compile the "aha learning moments" into a two page documentation summary (as shown in this example) to add to portfolios. Not all the children participate in each inquiry, so we only add this to the students who have participated. This two pager is about the learning that occurred and it is written for any parent to understand what we learned as a class. It doesn't necessarily mean that they will see their child's photo on words in it. Rather, it is an invitation to visit the complete documentation of the inquiry found in the inquiry binder.

      Does this help?

  2. Joanne, This is wonderful documentation! It is lovely for the children to see their work and ideas presented so beautifully. I'd love to ask what program/app you used to create this finished product. Many thanks!

  3. Hey Joanne, I love the format you used to outline this inquiry. Did you create with a word document or pdf program? I can't figure it out! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

  4. Hi,

    Thank you for your comment!

I used a template from the program Pages and then exported it as a pdf. To display it onto the blog, I used a website called Scribd. There, you can upload photos and pdf's and embed them into your blog.

  5. Hello Ms. Babalis!

WOW! This is amazing. It is great to see all of the children's learning as it incorporated many different curriculum areas! I really like how it ties everything together and highlights the important aspects. I will have to remember to do this for my future inquiries! Thank you!

    Hope all is well!

  6. Hi Joanne,
I am wondering where do you find the "Big ideas" from? Is there a list of big ideas or you come up with the big ideas?

    Thanks!
